Madi Day-Levy

I’m a woodcarver and artist based in Brighton, UK.

My route to woodcarving wasn’t a straight road. I grew up in the company of old things, as the stepdaughter of an antique furniture restorer, bringing cups of tea to the shed at the bottom of the garden. A fascination with the past led me to study Medieval History at UCL (BA, 2017), followed by Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art (MA, 2018). I then trained in Historic Woodcarving and Gilding at the City & Guilds of London Art School in 2025.

Now, I have a shed of my own. At the moment, I'm spending much of my time carving spoons, alongside larger-scale work using traditional chisels and techniques. I'm interested in bringing traditional carving skills into new contexts, playing with the relationship between old and new, familiar and unexpected.

In 2026, I started teaching workshops through Studio Nibbly to share the joy of carving with others. Through workshops in beautiful settings, I teach traditional carving skills in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, inviting people to slow down, connect with materials and think with their hands.

I also welcome enquiries about carving commissions. Whether you have an idea for a piece of your own or would like to learn to carve, I'm all ears. Get in touch — I'd love to hear from you.
